Pensacola in the Civil War

Pensacola experienced numerous transitions during the civil war. Florida seceded from the Union, Confederate forces seized Fort Pickins, the union army later triumphed in taking back Pensacola. Through these many changes Pensacola remained a major port city and played an important role in the Civil War.

Major William Chase and Pensacola

Major William Chase, while serving the confederacy, played an important role in helping the economy of Pensacola grow in the years before the Civil War. He was responsible for creating new industry in and around the city. His primary job was overseeing the construction of the ports, and eventually forts, not only in Pensacola, but along the Gulf Coast.

Andrew Pickens and the Battle of Cowpens

Andrew Pickens, and his militia, played a crucial role in the Battle of Cowpens. It was considered the turning point for the war in the Southern Colonies. Pickens took a stand for freedom and in doing so was awarded for his bravery in defending the independence of America. Fort Pickens, located in Pensacola, Florida, is named in his honor.

Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried, will be in Pensacola October 9 – 11. O’Brien is a Vietnam veteran and his book is a modern classic about the war and its after effects. Jill Hubbs, board member for the Veterans Memorial Park will be taking Mr. O’Brien on a tour of the park and the Wall South on Thursday, October 9th at 5:00 pm.
